"Someone said to me once, 'some of your films are mad, you're mad, and you deal with mad subjects'. One of the things that's wrong with film is that it's not madly enough. It's used academically. It's used as a prop for words. You take a film script, they're just words. There might be some sort of funny old idea mixed up in them, a germ or a notion of something there, but a script, by definition, has to do with the writer's view. This area of pure cinema, whatever that amounts to, has nothing to do with words, isn't explored enough".
